Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
This Nevada State Health Division grant helps to support a community diabetes self-management
education program.
The objective of this grant is to address the Hispanic population and their diabetes self-management,
including A1C tests, oral and foot exams and influenza and pneumococcal vaccination. FCC will help the state to
meet this objective by coordinating a six-week (minimum) multi-faceted, evidence-based program that provides
participants with education on diabetes self-management.
In 2010-11, FCC staff facilitated two six-week sessions in Lander and Pershing County
through the course of the first grant cycle. In 2011-12, FCC will coordinate one six-week session in each county
(Humboldt, Lander and Pershing) through the end of the grant cycle (March 28, 2012).

OTS Highway Safety Grant
Frontier Community Coalition Awarded Grant from Nevada Department of Public Safety
April 7, 2011
Lovelock, NV - The Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is
pleased to announce that Frontier Community Coalition has been awarded a grant to assist the State of Nevada with their
2011 Highway Safety Plan. The $20,000 award officially started in February 2011 and will run through
September 2011. The funding will be used to increase awareness of risks associated with driving impaired.
Frontier Community Coalition plans to present new programs and to partner with existing programs to teach the
youth in the tri-county area about these risks.
Since this is a community problem Frontier Community Coalition will be partnering with
different entities in each community - law enforcement, community members, juvenile probation, school districts,
local EMS and courts to address the problem and work on viable solutions. The plan includes mock "juvenile
parties," mock "vehicle accidents" and community awareness presentations and information
exchange.
"The increasing rate of alcohol related fatalities and injuries involving young drivers
continues to be a problem in the state of Nevada. Travel in the tri-county region of Lander, Humboldt and Pershing
Counties involves long drives. Many of these trips are for joining friends to party and socialize. Unfortunately on
many occasions the use of alcohol greatly increases the risk of driving impaired," Jeffrey Munk, Executive
Director of Frontier Community Coalition, said. "We are excited about the opportunity to work with our
community partners to decrease the risk so our youth can grow and become safe, healthy members of our
communities," Munk said.
